8 Steps for a Relaxing At-Home Spa Experience

You deserve a relaxing moment. Pamper yourself and relieve stress with these easy tips and tricks for a DIY at-home spa!

Is there anything more indulgent and relaxing than a day spent at the spa? Hours spent solely on pampering yourself and relieving stress is honestly one of the simple joys in life that everyone deserves every once in a while.

However, between work and other life commitments, it can be difficult sometimes to find the time (or budget!) to fit a spa trip into your regular schedule. This does not mean that you should skimp on self-care. As they say, if there’s a will there’s a way!

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways you can bring a little of that pampering magic into the comforts of your own home.

Follow these 8 DIY tips and tricks on how you can create your very own tranquil sanctuary and treat yourself to a relaxing spa-experience right in the comforts of your own home!

 1. Whip up some detox water

Start your relaxing journey by indulging in luxurious and refreshing detox water! This little detail enhances the whole DIY spa experience. There’s nothing like drinking infused water made with delicious fruits and herbs free of the extra calories, sugars and artificial flavorings to really get you into that zen state of mind.

Whip up one of these easy infused water recipes and enjoy pampering yourself with one of these beautifying detox drinks!

  • Apple + Cinnamon
Apples are a great detox food that contain tons of vitamins that are good for your general health. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, as they say! Cinnamon, on the other hand, is great for weight loss. It has natural thermogenic properties that rev up your metabolism and help burn calories.
  • Pear + Raspberry + Rosemary
Pear is loaded with detoxifying nutrients and contains tons of fiber. Raspberries initiate fat metabolism and aid the liver in detoxing. The pungent flavor of rosemary is a great complement to fresh fruits and it boosts immunity and improves digestion.
Thoroughly wash all fruits and infuse overnight!
  • Blueberries + Lemon + Cucumber
A super refreshing combo that will make you look and feel good. Drinking this regularly can help clear breakouts and leave you with a radiant glow! It also boosts your metabolism and is packed with antioxidants to protect you from free radicals.
Squeeze the juice of a lemon into your water to significantly raise the amount of vitamin C, antioxidants and other beneficial nutrients into your glass.

2. Engage your senses

One of the reasons why trips to the spa are extra special is because you’re indulging all five of your senses — sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing. Bear this in mind when setting up your at-home treatment.

Incorporating elements that will please and satisfy all of your senses can make a big difference in creating a calm headspace. The following tips may sound simple, but these little add-ons can make even simple, ordinary beauty rituals feel extra special and more spa-like.

Dim the lighting

You would be surprised at how lighting can really set up that stress-relieving mood in your home spa.

If you can switch to dimmer light bulbs or set up a lovely lamp in a corner to create ambience, go for it. Lighting up some gorgeous scented candles can also do the trick. Just try to make sure they are soy based and made with essential oils and not with harmful, chemical synthetic fragrances.

Play serene music

A true spa would not be complete without a soft, tranquil melody playing faintly in the background and there is a good reason behind that. Listening to this type of music is proven to decrease heart rates and helps to naturally relax the body and slow down the mind.

Playing some serene music in your home spa also helps to drown out all the household sounds that may distract you during your special me-time.

When picking out what music to play, go for instrumentals rather than songs. Lyrics from songs can actually trigger memories and subconsciously up your stress levels. There are tons of spa music playlists on Youtube that go on for hours, pick one that you like and play it softly in the background to set a mood and calm vibe.

Bask in calming scents

Your at-home spa will not be complete without wonderful calming fragrances. Fortunately, the scents that wash over your senses when you enter a spa can be replicated right in the comforts of your own home thanks to essential oils.

You can add a few drops of your chosen essential oil into your bath water, mix a blend in a diffuser,  create relaxing massage oils, or add a few drops to your body scrubs and moisturizers. As soon as you step foot into your bathroom and take a deep breath you will feel instant tranquility.

3. Start with a clean slate

Now that you have all of the above ready and set up, start your at-home spa experience by simply pulling your hair back. Just like how the spas do it, pick up a wide hair band so that your hair is completely out of your face.

Next up is to start cleansing your face. You need a clean, blank slate free of dirt and dead skin cells.

If you’re wearing makeup, you need to use a makeup remover first before washing your face. This step is very important. A lot of makeup nowadays is smudge proof or waterproof so cleansers alone cannot remove them fully.

Lather for at least 30 seconds

Your cleanser needs some time to dissolve the oils and dirt sitting on the surface of your skin. Take extra care and gently massage your face in circular motions for at least 30 seconds to thoroughly remove any dirt, grime or oil. Don’t forget to cleanse your neck as well!

While cleansing your skin, start to unwind and empty your mind. Imagine washing away all the thoughts causing you any stress and anxiety. You will be surprised at how simply washing your face can be extremely therapeutic.

4. Steam things up

Take your usual beauty routine up a notch by steaming your face just like how the professional spas do during a facial.

Contrary to popular belief, the heat from the steam during a facial does not open your pores wider. Instead, it draws out oils, dirt and dead skin cells clogging up your pores that normal cleansing cannot get rid of.

Using steam also helps prep your skin for maximum absorption of the key and active ingredients in the products you will use in the later steps of your at-home spa routine!

If you don’t have a home facial steamer, try these DIY methods to purify your skin:

  • Step 1. You will need either a sink or large bowl. Boil 4 to 6 cups of water, depending on the size of your sink or bowl. If you’d like, you can add a handful of herbs or teas as the water starts to boil.
  • Step 2. Turn off the heat and carefully pour the water into your sink or bowl. You can add a few drops of essential oils like eucalyptus or lavender to open up your nasal passage, reduce anxiety and to induce a sense of calm.
  • Step 3. Hold your face about 6 inches above the water and drape a big towel over your head and the sink or bowl. The steam should feel soothing and relaxing on your skin.
  • Step 4. If you feel any discomfort, raise or lower your head for more or less heat. You can also lift a corner of the towel or add cool water to lessen the heat if needed. Steam your face for 5 to 10 minutes.

5. Mask it out

Nothing says self-care and relaxation more than a mud mask! Using a mud mask is definitely a luxury as you likely will not wear one when you are busy or in a hurry since they take time to harden.

After your initial cleansing and steaming steps, use either your bare hands or a mask brush to start painting the mud mask over your damp face. Make sure to keep the eyes, eyebrows, nostrils and lip area clear of the mask and try your best to apply it as evenly as possible.

Leave it on for about 15-20 minutes and remove using a washcloth soaked in warm water. This will help loosen up and dissolve the mud mask and make rinsing it off so much easier and gentler on your skin.

6. Treat your eyes

Eyes tired from staring at a computer screen for hours on end? Placing cucumber slices over your eyes while wearing a mud mask is a must for your DIY spa session!

The juices from the cucumber can help soothe tired eyes, reduce swelling and even combat environmental toxins that can make your eyes appear worn out or puffy.

Cucumber also has a very high water content that helps moisturize the eye area and helps support the skin’s natural elasticity.

After painting on your mud mask, place a slice of cucumber over each eye for 10 minutes and just relax.

7. Soak away the stress

If you have the extra time to pamper yourself, run a warm bath and soak away all the stress and tension of your tired muscles.

Since we’re going for that extra special spa vibe, you can make the experience even more stress-relieving by adding in a few drops of your favorite essential oils or by using special aromatic bath salts.

Just lay back, close your eyes, clear your mind and focus on the warmth of the bath water melting all your aches and pains away. Your mind and body will definitely feel much better.

8. Do your nails

Giving your fingers and toes a pop of color is the cherry on top of your rejuvenating at-home spa treatment!

This step is totally optional (not everyone is the best at doing their own nails, we know) but if you have the skills and time, go ahead and treat yourself! Your freshly painted nails will be a nice reminder that you took the time to give yourself some TLC.

Takeaway

The whole point of a DIY spa is to create an environment where you can take time to truly dedicate to yourself to relax and unwind.

We know that life can be hectic sometimes and it’s easy to get drowned in all the stress and chaos. You need some quality TLC, even if it’s with just a quick spa treatment that you can do on a Saturday night at home.

And lastly, do not ever feel guilty about taking some time for yourself — you deserve it and don’t ever forget that!
