8 Beauty Tips for a Firm and Younger Looking Neck
Don’t forget to take care of the skin around your neck!

Did you know that the skin on our neck is actually quite different than that on our face?

The skin on our neck is much thinner and has less fatty tissues. Besides that, there is also much less collagen and elastin, the fibrous components that keep the skin firm and supple. It also doesn’t produce as much oil because it has less oil glands, it’s not as plump and moisturized.

All of these differences cause signs of aging such as vertical bands, uneven skin tone, loose and crepey skin to show up much faster on the neck than on our face. And not to forget, years of gravity pulling also causes the skin to droop resulting in what’s more commonly known as the “turkey neck.”

Even if you haven’t been diligent in taking care of your neck, it’s not yet too late! You can still make changes to your lifestyle to give your neck the extra love and care that it needs. Just follow these eight simple tips to keep your neck beautiful and youthful for longer:

1. Extend everything down to your neck

You don’t want to have a glowing, youthful face on top of a dull and saggy neck, right? This is why it’s a must to also take care of the skin around your neck.

Extend all skincare from the face down to the neck

The simple rule is to apply everything in your skincare routine onto your jawline, neck, and decollete — from your cleanser right up to your moisturizer so that these areas can reap the benefits too.

Remove makeup from your neck

It’s also very important to remove the makeup from your neck when you’re removing your face makeup. Neck skin also contains pores and forgetting to remove the makeup on this area can block the pores and hinder the skin to regenerate which can result to dull and sagging skin in the future.

2. Use neck-targeted treatments

The skin on our neck is extra sensitive like that of the skin around our eyes so it also needs extra TLC on top of your regular moisturizer.

It’s a part of your body that bends and moves a lot so the skin here can become loose over time. It’s also more susceptible to dryness and other signs of aging which is why specific skincare products are formulated for the unique needs of the skin in this area.

Try out YEOUTH’s Neck Firming Cream; this powerful age-defying neck firming cream is designed for the delicate skin of the jawline, neck, and dècolletè, so they appear firmer and smoother, with a more lifted appearance.

3. Always apply sunscreen on your neck

Our necks are also exposed to sunlight which means they are also exposed to the harmful UV rays of the sun. So if you only apply sunscreen on your face, you risk your neck looking older with signs of aging such as sagging and crepey skin in the future.

Keep your neck looking as young and vibrant as your face by also extending your SPF moisturizer down to this area. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that can protect you from both UVA and UVB rays and has an SPF value of 15 or higher every day.

Apply an ample amount at least 15 minutes before you go outside and reapply at least every two hours.

4. Don’t forget to exfoliate

Exfoliation of the neck is also very important. Since manual exfoliation includes a lot of rubbing that pulls and tugs on the skin on your neck, we recommend a chemical peel to exfoliate this area. Try our Glycolic Acid Peel! It works by deeply penetrating the layers of the skin to reveal newer, younger, and fresher skin underneath. Remember to apply using upward strokes and make sure to not leave on for more than five minutes.

Exfoliating your neck will slough away all dead skin cells resulting in a brighter and more even skin tone.

5. Apply products in an upward motion

The way you apply products on your neck can make a big difference in how it will look 10 years from now. It’s very delicate compared to the face so you have to handle it with care.

The proper way to apply products on this area is to move both your palms vertically in an upward direction. Never do circular motions or go from top to bottom. These motions will encourage the skin to become crepey and sag in the future.

Remember to always go from the base of your neck up to your jawline whenever you’re removing your make-up, massaging in oils or applying any skincare product.

When massaging with oils, you should also be careful not to over massage the skin on your neck. Handling it should last from 10-15 minutes maximum as too much can strain the delicate skin around it.

6. Keep your chin up

If you’re looking down on your screen with your chin tucked to your chest right now, you need to stop. You might just be rearing an ugly tech neck!

Coined by dermatologists, the term 'tech neck' refers to the deep-seated horizontal creases on your neck which are caused by the skin on the neck folding for long periods of time. Tech neck increases the early onset of neck lines and wrinkles. So from now on, be conscious of your posture when you’re using your desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone. The prolonged amount of time folding your neck while looking down on these gadgets can induce or further aggravate neck wrinkles.

Avoid looking down on your gadgets

Try repositioning your computer so you’re not looking down at it all day. The same goes for your handheld gadgets – hold them up higher so your neck doesn’t crease.

7. Tighten skin with simple neck exercises

Neck wrinkles are often due to excess or loose skin but it is possible to tone it with quick and easy neck exercises that you can do daily. Do the following during your downtime:

  • While sitting, tilt your head back and then pucker your lips as if you’re about to kiss the ceiling. You’ll feel the skin on your neck tighten. Hold this for about five seconds, tilt your head back down and then repeat 4 more times.
  • Sit down straight and then point your chin toward the ceiling. Make a chewing motion with your mouth and repeat about 20 times.

These exercises will work the muscles on your face and neck; do either daily for firmer skin.

8. Live a healthy lifestyle

You can’t turn back the hands of time but you can still proactively change your lifestyle for tighter and younger looking skin.

Avoid sudden weight gain or loss

Weight gain stretches out your skin and if you suddenly lose a lot of weight in just a short amount of time, the extra loose skin will sag. Sudden weight loss doesn't give your skin enough time to adjust so it will be loose in areas like the belly, arms, thighs and around the neck.

Young skin is still elastic so it can snap back into place more effectively. However, older skin is less elastic and may not shrink back as well. For this, we recommend the use of our Neck Firming Cream. Loaded with Argireline and antioxidants from Green Tea and Vitamin C, this best-selling neck treatment helps target and improve the appearance on the delicate skin of the neck, dècolletè, and jawline areas so it appears firm, smooth, and with a more lifted appearance.

It’s still best to maintain your current weight to keep your skin firm and youthful. If you need to lose weight, try to lose weight gradually to avoid sagging skin. Stay away from crash dieting and instead exercise, even if it’s just for 15 minutes each day, and eat a healthy nutrient dense diet.

Eat a healthy diet

Aside from exercising, you should also be eating food that’s filled with the necessary vitamins and antioxidants you need for that healthy, beautiful skin.

Try not to eat processed foods and rather focus on natural fruits, nuts, and vegetables high in vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin C, and essential fatty acids like carrots, salmon, walnuts, sweet potatoes, broccoli, etc. These along with 8 glasses of water daily can increase your skin’s cell turnover and result in healthier skin.

Quit smoking

Another habit that accelerates your skin’s natural aging process is smoking. Some of the toxins in cigarette smoke damage your skin’s collagen and elastin — fibrous components that keep it firm and supple — causing the skin to deteriorate and age faster.

If you want to keep your skin firmer longer, it’s time to consider reducing and eventually quitting your smoking habit.

Patience and consistency is the key and you will surely reap the wonderful health and beauty benefits when following these 8 beauty and lifestyle tips consistently!
